Mount Hope House

Mount Hope, New York

Located in the bucolic setting of upstate New York, this project was for an art collector who owned the original depression-era stone house as a weekend retreat. Over decades he modified the existing surroundings into a lush natural landscape. As part of his retirement plans, he wished to build an addition onto the original stone house and make it his primary residence.

The design of the addition integrates with the site’s natural topography allowing it to seamlessly fit into the surrounding context. Large expanses of glass create a series of framed views of the landscape. The building’s exterior is clad with 100-year-old sinker cypress reclaimed from the Louisiana Bayou. As part of the project, the original stone house was completely renovated and reconfigured to work with the new programmatic layout.
